Imagine a pavement that will last forever. A pipe dream? No, a reality. Just as you expect the foundation of your house to last forever, scientific breakthroughs in technology and materials have enabled pavement engineers to design asphalt pavements with an infinite life span against fatigue cracking – the primary failure mechanisms in deep pavements.
The concept is to force any distress that can occur to the surface where it can be easily repaired (often overnight while you sleep). Just as roofs have a limited lifespan, so does the surface of a roadway. When eventually repaired, the latest and best materials can be included. Remember when shingles lasted only 20 years? Now 25 year, 30 year, and even better shingles are available through improvements in products and technology. The same concepts apply to asphalt – done right and properly maintained you never have to fix the foundation! Today’s asphalt is not your father’s asphalt. Advances in processing, materials, and design have significantly improved the performance and life span of asphalt – they last longer which means less cost over the life of the pavement.
